Artist Statement for Experiment
I’ve been interested in art and biology ever since I was a senior in high school. Science is methodical and question-based, and I see art as the same thing. My art influences my biological studies. I find inspiration for my art in life. Therefore, I wanted to document an experiment in a way that shows the creativity in the scientific process.
I love to look at the details. In the series of paintings, Experiment, I chose to focus on the details of the experimental process. I wanted to highlight every angle, line, shape, and color. By going to the extreme of precision of the physicality of the lab equipment, I gained abstract compositions that make the viewer ponder and recognize the objects, just like the back-and-forth game of questions and discovery in science.
Rather than photograph the lab equipment, I chose to paint the images to gain the textile quality of the laboratory equipment in the series Experiment. This element connects the audience with scientific knowledge to the art world. I also presented the lab reports to allow the art world to see what the scientific community focuses upon. Both aspects of this piece connect the two audiences to see each other’s points of view.
This series also reflects the intrigue that I feel every time I step into a lab or art studio. I am a very tactile person. I love creating and working with my hands. I find my mind’s eye clears whenever I’m in the studio or in lab. This project reflects the small moments that I find beautiful during the development process of an experiment as well as an art piece.
